Id bet it rocked. It’s got a great 4x4 system for it’s weight.

I bet a beach like that is one place where these fancy new-fangled electronic 4wd systems can really shine. We know most will never really see challenging trail conditions. But soft/variable sand can be tricky and it’s not that hard to get an old-school 4x4 stuck if you’re not smart about it.

Plenty of Subies, CX5s, Rav4s, and whatever else crossovers on the beaches by me, too.

Depends. Had a friend in high school with a brand new Freelander and the poor thing couldn’t go anywhere in the sugar sand. Didn’t have enough sidewall and just sunk down.

Even the best 4wd systems can’t overcome bad tires.

To be fair a freelander would get suck in lukewarm asphalt.

Man my Gen 1 rav4 rocked the beach so hard. Light makes right in the sand and 70 series tires with a true locking 4wd made it damn near unsinkable. A 2 door coverable version would be the best beach car.

Well that’s just sad.

On a related note: a few years back, Jeep had a promotion at a local ski area where they drove a bunch of new models out onto the hard-packed snow by the main lift. This was around the introduction of the Commander, I think. Anyway the snow softened a bit during the day, and when they tried to move the jeeps back to the parking lot, they all got stuck, framed out on the snow. They had to use a snowcat to drag each of them out. This was all underneath a gigantic TRAIL RATED banner, much to everyone’s amusement. To be fair anything but one of those arctic trucks would have gotten stuck in those conditions. But the fact that they didn’t see that coming was really funny.

I was surprised. There are a bunch of AWD crossovers up here too. Escapes and Rav4s and other stuff

I was working on Captiva Island once, and the second my 4WD pickup hit the sand it sunk in. So a guy with a Cat front-end loader came over to get me out and he immediately got stuck. Some kinds of sand just won’t let you pass.

You really don’t need the low range in OBX if you air down and drive carefully. I seldom go 4lo in my Jeep. We actually got my buddy’s Volvo wagon with awd across one of the accesses, but it just didn’t have enough ground clearance and we chickened out when we started plowing sand. I’ll be back at my house in Avon in 2 weeks. I’m jealous of all these pictures.
